METHODS OF IMPLEMENTING THE RUSSIAN CHURCH AND SINGING TRADITION IN S. V. RACHMANINOFF’S “ALL-NIGHT VIGIL”
The article discusses citation and style modelling, two methods of translating church singing traditions in Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil” based on the liturgical text. The composer quotes the znamenny, Greek and Kyiv chants in most parts of the cycle and writes his own melodies in the rest according to the model of authentic sources, giving them features and signs of the church singing tradition. In “All-Night Vigil” there are an invariant and a style modification of church chants. The analysis of the composer’s work on the sources made it possible to identify the basic principles of handling authentic tunes, to identify the reasons for the use of citation methods and style modelling, and to assess the importance of liturgical music for Rachmaninoff himself and for Russian culture of that period as a whole.
