Equity-Centered adaptive learning (ECAL) in Mathematics: Personalizing education for underrepresented groups

This paper explores Equity-Centered Adaptive Learning (ECAL) as an innovative framework for enhancing mathematics education, particularly for underrepresented student groups. ECAL integrates adaptive learning technology with culturally responsive teaching, offering a personalized approach that addresses the diverse needs of learners. The theoretical foundation supporting ECAL emphasizes social, cultural, and cognitive factors that influence learning, making it especially effective in promoting equity. Key components of ECAL include personalized learning materials, continuous feedback, and the integration of students’ cultural contexts. The paper also examines the significant benefits of ECAL for underrepresented students, such as closing achievement gaps and improving engagement and confidence in mathematics. Finally, recommendations are offered for educators, policymakers, and institutions on how to effectively implement ECAL to foster a more inclusive and equitable educational environment. Keywords: Equity-Centered Adaptive Learning, Personalized Education, Underrepresented Students, Mathematics Education, Culturally Responsive Teaching.
