Thermal and Energy Management of an HVAC System Using OCHRE in a Transactive Market Framework

With the significant increment of demand-side technologies, residential buildings face drastic changes in energy consumption pattern. In this paper, we propose energy-management methods for the thermodynamic-based Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. A mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed to compute the optimal energy schedule of the HVAC sensitive to the Real-Time Pricing (RTP) signal. Additionally, the fractional-HVAC and transactive energy models are presented to compare the cost savings and consumption patterns. A Python-based Object-Oriented Controllable High-Resolution Residential Energy Model (OCHRE) model is then proposed to compare the baseline model with the linear methods. Using the OCHRE environment, this paper aims to control HVAC systems by maintaining the indoor temperature of buildings at a provided customer comfort level while simultaneously reducing the energy consumption. The outcome of this paper highlights the electricity cost-reduction while preserving the thermodynamic, network, and market constraints11The source code for this work will be made available after the acceptance of the paper..
