On Cyber Threats in Military Communication Nets
The activities on cybersecurity were initiated by the GAO report 2018, which stated that the US weapons systems developed in 2012-2017 have severe cyber vulnerabilities. It was based on the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2014, the latest version 2.0 (2024). From the software point of view, we looked at the fate of four US weapons programs: (1) F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The F-35 Program software has more than 80 million lines of code. Despite 20 years and ${\$}$62.5 billion spent on R&D alone, there is not yet an answer - how to complete the F-35 Program; (2) Joint Tactical Radio System - the purpose to replace the 25 to 30 currently used military radio systems. After 15 years and ${\$}$15 billion, the JTRS program was canceled in 2011; (3) Single Security Architecture based on Joint Regional Security Stacks. In 2021 the Pentagon postponed this ${\$}$2 billion cybersecurity project; (4) Missile destroyer DDG 1000 (started 2006) is driven by 14 to 16 million lines of computer code. Cybersecurity and software architectures are the aim of this paper. CORBA technology was originally designed for RPC applications. It was a critical mistake. Instead of CORBA, nowadays there can be REST; GraphQL; Protocol Buffers; gRPC; microservices, etc.
