Experimental Exploration of OTFS-Based 28 GHz UWB Pulsed Doppler Radar

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a novel modulation system for wireless communication in which data symbols are allocated in delay-Doppler (DD) domain. OTFS is proposed for use in next-generation communication systems and one of its uses is also in radar technologies. In this paper, a preliminary setup of an OTFS-based ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse Doppler radar is presented with results obtained from the experiments. Implemented radar’s prototype transmits OTFS modulated pilot with the use of arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) and up-conversion to the 28 GHz carrier frequency. In the experiments, a static object at different distances from the radar system is detected with three delay resolutions. Results are represented in DD domain and are consistent with distances to the object. Radar’s measurements also show the connection between DD domain and range-velocity matrix, through simple conversions of axes.
