Investigating the Effects of Improved Structural Design on Energy Yield in a Real Solar Farm
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of a 150-kW solar farm to optimize solar yield through improved structural design. Using the System Advisor Model (SAM 2023.12.17), a predictive framework was developed to characterize the behavior of the existing power plant and facilitate its evaluation. The model's accuracy was validated with actual plant data. Parametric analyses compared the current fixed-rack system with the proposed 1-axis tracking system. The fixed-rack system produced 72,715 kWh of annual AC energy in the first year, while the 1-axis system generated 89,594 kWh. Correspondingly, annual cost savings improved from $13,863 to $16,856. The 1-axis detailed ‘PV-Battery’ model revealed unparalleled advantages. This model achieved annual cost savings of $16,856, significant system equity appreciation, and a reduced simple payback period of 13.2 years from 15.8 years in the fixed-axis system. These findings underscore the substantial performance and financial benefits of the 1-axis tracking system over the existing fixed-axis configuration.
