Reliable Gait Measurements Using Smartphone Vision Sensor

This article presents an accessible, self-assessable, and cost-effective gait analysis system that utilizes a smartphone to evaluate an individual’s walking pattern without the need for wearable sensors. Traditional motion capture systems rely on markers or sensors placed on the body to assess gait and joint angles, primarily focusing on the lower extremities. In addition, some existing solutions use recorded video for gait analysis. In contrast, our system performs real-time gait analysis without requiring expensive wearable sensors or specialized laboratory equipment. This innovative technology allows individuals to monitor their gait patterns easily, discreetly, and affordably, empowering them to take proactive steps to improve mobility and overall quality of life. The system’s average joint angle measurement error for the lower extremities is <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$7.8^{\circ } ~\pm ~3.9^{\circ } $ </tex-math></inline-formula>, demonstrating its effectiveness.
