The Evaluation of the Impact of VE for Shortening Construction Periods and VE for Changing Construction Methods on the Occurrence of Disasters at Construction Sites

This study examines the impact of Value Engineering (VE) for shortening construction periods and changing construction methods on disaster occurrences at construction sites. While past research has focused on cost and time savings, this study explores the relationship between VE and construction-related accidents, particularly falls and collapses. An online survey of 206 construction professionals from Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon was conducted, with data analyzed using multiple regression and mediation analysis. The findings show that both types of VE significantly influence falls and collapses, with construction period and construction cost as mediators. VE for shortening construction periods affects disasters indirectly through construction period, while VE for changing methods does so through construction cost. These results indicate that VE can increase accident risks, highlighting the need to balance efficiency with safety. Safety reviews during design and risk assessments during construction are essential. Ensuring sufficient construction periods and costs, along with developing integrated models to enhance VE safety, are critical to improving safety management and policy in the construction industry.
