Dear Charlotte of 1989

Abstract: This letter reexamines the historical moment in which Charlotte Canning began the research on her dissertation. She raises questions about how her dissertation might have been different had she engaged more fully with the events and politics of the late 1980s and early 1990s. These questions are motivated by current events and politics and ask how we assign meaning to lived experiences as historians.
