Touchless monitoring of respiratory rate stratified according to demographic sub-groups

Aim: We developed a touchless depth sensing technology which allows accurate and continuous respiratory rate measurement (RRdepth) without attaching probes to the patient (Figure 1). Here, we report on the performance stratified according to various demographic classes. Methods: Thirty adult volunteers undertook a range of set breathing rates to cover a target breathing range of 4 to 40 breaths/min. RRdepth was compared to a manually scored capnograph reference (RRcap). Results were stratified according to BMI, age, male/female class, & with/without self-reported respiratory conditions (asthma/COPD). Results: RMSD accuracies (breaths/min) for [1] BMI Ranges 15-18.5, >18.5-25, >25-30, >30-35, >35 were 0.43, 0.86, 0.72, 0.54, 0.74; [2] age ranges 20-30, 30-50, 50-80 were 0.87, 0.58, 0.80; [3] male/female were 0.86 and 0.69; [4] with / without respiratory conditions were 0.79 and 0.77. Conclusions: Although, there were relatively small numbers per sub-group, it is noteworthy that all stratifications yielded RMSD accuracies within one breath/min.
