Smoking cessation - a quality improvement project
Introduction: Smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and premature death, with nearly one million people in the UK having died from smoking-related causes since 2010. At a local level, smoking prevalence in the London borough of Newham for adults is 13.9% - higher than the London and England average according to data from the Office for National Statistics (Newham Council, 2023). The focus of this project would be the respiratory ward, my home ward at the time. The aim would be to increase the percentage of smoking status forms completed for new patients on the ward. A smoking status form is a digital document which should ideally be completed for every patient in the hospital, even if they have never smoked. This form helps identify how much a patient smokes, what form of NRT they would require and offers an automatic referral to their local smoking cessation team. From a quantitative point of view, the aim was for > 90% of these forms to be completed. Methods: The method proposed would be a simple yet effective one – a concise poster. <fig><object-id>erj;64/suppl_68/PA502/F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><graphic></graphic></fig> Results: <fig><object-id>erj;64/suppl_68/PA502/F2</object-id><object-id>F2</object-id><object-id>F2</object-id><graphic></graphic></fig> Conclusion: To conclude, there was an overall increase in the percentage of forms completed. However, the aim of a 90% average was not met.
