Cystic Fibrosis in Turkiye: Ministry of Health Data

Objective: It is important to reveal the situation of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) in countries in order to develop health policies. We aimed to reveal the situation of patients in the whole country from the government health data system. Method: ICD-10 codes related to CF were reviewed from the E-Nabız database of the Turkish Ministry of Health. Patients who were diagnosed with CF-related ICD-10 at least twice between 2015-2021 and who used dornase alpha and/or pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy were included in the study. The number of patients, their demographic characteristics, the drug treatments used by the patients, the presence of complications, the number of deceased patients, and the ages of the deceased patients were obtained from the database. Results: Between 2015 and 2021, 4657 patients were followed up with CF, and 46% were women. The average age at diagnosis was 5.65±7.20, and the current age was 10.73±7.80 years. 748 patients were over 18 years of age. The age of diagnosis has decreased over the years. CF prevalence was found to be 52.09 per million, incidence 3.60 per million, and fatality rate 1.40%. The most common complications were gastroesophageal reflux, sinusitis and diabetes. The usage rates of dornase alpha, inhaled antibiotics, and azithromycin were found to be lower than in USA and Europe. During this period, 308 patients died. The number and rates of deaths of CF patients have increased over the years, and patients often died in childhood. Discussion: It is important to reveal the data of CF patients, determine their needs, and develop health policies regarding diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. In addition, cost analyses can be made with national data.
