TRANSLATION AND CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION OF THE ASTHMA SELF-MANAGEMENT QUESTIONNAIRE FOR THE BRAZILIAN POPULATION

Aims: To translate and cross-cultural adapt the Asthma Self-Management Questionnaire (ASMQ) for the Brazilian population. Materials and methods: This exploratory methodological study included participants with asthma diagnosis, aged between 18 and 75 years of both sexes. Those individuals with inability to understand any of the study procedures were excluded. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation followed the stages of translation into Portuguese, synthesis of translations, reverse translation, synthesis of translations, review by a multidisciplinary committee of specialists and application in a pre-test group with representatives of the target population according to the COSMIN. Statistical analysis was performed using SPPS software. Results: Total sample was 41 participants (4 translators, 5 health professionals in the expert committee and 32 subjects with asthma diagnosis in the pre-test phase). The experts panel mean age was 37.6±8.82 and the mean performance time was 12.8±8.58 years. After three rounds it was found a satisfactory comprehension index (CVI > 0.80) for the experts committee. The pre-test group mean age was 34.93±11.17 years and 56.3% were females. Moreover, 75% reported dyspnea during physical activity and 68.8% were not hospitalized in the last 12 months. When we assessed clarity and comprehension in the pre-test group, it was necessary two rounds to reach a CVI >0.80. Conclusion: according to the results found for the experts panel and the pre-test group the ASMQ is properly translated and adapted to the Brazilian population.
