The Association Between Radiological Scoring with Clinical Findings in Patients with Non Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis

Background-Aim: Lung imaging is useful in assessing the presence of structural lung disease in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis(NCFB)patients. The aim is to analyze the association between radiological scoring and clinical, microbiological findings in NCFB patients. Methods: We analyzed the radiological score(Computed tomography(Brody score) of patients. Results: The mean age was 8.5±3.5years.12 patients(52.2%) were diagnosed with PCD;6 patients had immunodeficiency;and 5 had other diseases. Bronchiectasis and peribronchial thickening were present in all patients. Hyperinflation, perihilar lymphadenopathy, mucus plugging, pectus deformity, paratracheal lymphadenopathy, and pleural effusion were present in 96%,39%,26%, and 17% of patients, respectively. Total CT score is 31(IQR:21–63), bronchiectasis score is 7(IQR:5-19),peribronchial thickening score is 7(3–18),parenchymal score is 7(3-11),hyperinflation score is 9(IQR:5-14), and mucus plugging score is 2(IQR:0-6). The highest scores were detected in the right middle lobe and lingula, followed by the left lower lobe, right lower lobe. There was a moderately negative correlation between body mass index and total CTscore(r:-0.52,p:0.04). No correlation was found between age, bacterial colonization, annual pulmonary exacerbation, and total CT score. There is no difference between PCD and nonCF-PCD patients in the median total score, mucus plug score, peribronchial thickening score, parenchyma score, and hyperaeration score Discussion: The most commonly affected lobes in patients with NCFB are the right middle lobe, lingula and lower lobes. Body mass index can be an indicator for the presence and extension of structural lung disease in NCFB.
