A Comprehensive Investigation of an Electro-Thermal Performance Assessment for Heterogenous Integrated Voltage Power Inverter Systems
This paper presents an investigation approach for assessing Electro-Thermal performances of System-in-Package (SiP) Voltage Power Inverter specifically tailored for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM). The herein presented approach addresses SiP solutions with a very high integration level. This integration could include a high-performance power stage representing a two level voltage-source-inverter, an advanced gate driver, and a sophisticated control stage in a compact, thermally-efficient package. Thereby, high power densities in a very small form factor with high reliability can be targeted. Such SiP inverter should be optimized for different applications, including electric power steering, oil pumps, and cooling fans. The high level of integration poses difficulties to assess the thermal performance under application conditions. The herein presented approach aims to address these problems. The first part introduces an approach for evaluate the junction temperature of the SiP. Subsequently, an electric pump is subjected to testing under various power transmission values, with two distinct control methods being evaluated: Block Commutation and Field Oriented Control (FOC) with Space Vector Modulation (SVM). For each power value required by the electric drive, explanation on how calculate the total power losses is presented. After, a differentiation is made between conduction power, switching power and losses inside the bodydiode.
