The association of bone mineral density and body composition, lung functions and functional exercise capacity in adults with cystic fibrosis.

The transition from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) children to adulthood not only emerges pulmonary involvement. As a result of systemic effects of CF, deterioration in bone mineral density (BMD) could have seen in some adults with CF. This study aimed to investigate association between body composition, BMD, postural change, lung function, functional exercise capacity in adults with CF. Clinically stable forty-five patients aged 18-45 years with CF were included in the study. Fifteen of patients had low BMD and thirty patients had normal BMD according to DEXA analysis. Fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), Body Mass Index (BMI), regional skinfold thickness measurements (triceps, biceps, suprailiac and subscapular sites) were used as body composition parameters. Posture analysis via Corbin Posture Analysis Scale, functional exercise capacity via incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), lung function via Spirometric tests were applied to all patients. FFM, was positively moderate associated with BMD, BMI, regional skinfold thickness (Triceps, Biceps), ISWT and strong association with FEF2575 (p<0.05). There was no correlation between FFM and posture scores (p>0.05). While FM was positively moderate correlated with BMI, ISRT and strong correlation with regional skinfold thickness and;FM was negatively correlated with FEF2575 and posture scores(p>0.05). Based on findings, higher FFM is related with better BMD, impoved exercise capacity and better pulmonary functions. However higher FM is related with impaired pulmonary functions and postural scores. It is recommended to follow body composition to prevent osteoporosis and maintain exercise capacity in adult CF.
