Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and Human F3/TF (Tissue Factor) Link as a Cornerstone of Thrombogenesis in COVID-19-associated pneumonia
The aim was to estimate the role of PAI-1 and TF on admission in hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia in comparison to bacterial pneumonia (CABP). Materials and methods: We observed 3 groups: Main (1) – 85 patients (age – 59 (52; 65) years, men – 45 (52.9%)), hospitalized with pneumonia with confirmed (PCR) COVID-19, Comparison (2) – 55 patients (age – 48.9 (34; 62) years, men – 30 (54.5%)), hospitalized with CABP without COVID-19; Control (3) – 25 healthy volunteers (age – 50.0 (35; 65) years, men – 13 (52.0%)). General clinical analysis, plasma PAI-1 and TF (ELISA Kit,) on admission before anticoagulants, statistical analysis. Results: On admission the highest level of PAI-1 (6.1 [0.15; 18] ng/ml) was in COVID-19 patients (Main group) and exceeds the Control group (0.1 [0.09; 0.11] ng/ml), р1-3=0,000) in more than 60 times. The level of TF was significantly higher in patients with COVID-19 (19 [0.25; 32] pg/mL, compared with CABP (0.523 [0.4; 0.95] pg/mL) and healthy controls (0.24 [0.12; 0.32] pg/mL), р1-2=0.028, р1-3=0.015, р2-3=0.001 <fig><object-id>erj;64/suppl_68/PA2410/F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><graphic></graphic></fig> Conclusions: increased level of PAI-1 and TF play the crucial role in thrombogenesis in COVID-19 pneumonia, which is asssociated with fybrinolisis and could be potentially prevented in future.
