The effectiveness of erdosteine in patients with COPD in combination with secondary bronchiectasis

Objectives: Study the levels of CRP in peripheral blood in patient with COPD in combination with secondary bronchiectasis (BE). Methods: 29 patients with COPD in combination with BE were examined and divided into 2 groups: group I (15 subj) with LAMA/LABA/ICS therapy; group II (14 subj), LAMA/LABA/ICS plus erdorstein (300 mg BID), during the 3 months. The control group consisted of 15 healthy individuals. Results: The average duration of an acute exacerbation (AE) in patients with COPD + secondary BE who received basic therapy was 11.7 ± 1.3 days, CRP level at the time of the onset of the AE was 12.24 ± 0. 98 mg/ml and at the time of the remission phase 6.75 ± 0.54 mg/ml. When adding erdosteine to basic COPD therapy in combination secondary BE in patients of the 2nd group, the average duration of AE was 8.1 ± 0.9 days, which was 1.44 times less in duration compared to similar indicators in the I group (p<0.001). The level of CRP in the I group at the beginning of AE was 11.97 ± 1.04 mg/ml, and in the remission phase it was 4.95 ± 0.32 mg/ml, which was 1.35 times more effective, compared with group comparative. On the 30th day from the start of therapy, CRP values tended to further normalize and amounted to 5.64 ± 0.33 mg/ml in the group and 4.08 ± 0.17 mg/ml in the II group, respectively, which demonstrates a 28% better effect (р˂0.05) when supplementing basic therapy with erdosteine. Conclusion: Added erdosteine to the basic therapy leads to a reduction in the duration of AE of COPD plus BE and also leads to a decrease in the levels of CRP, both at the onset of the remission phase and on the 30th day of therapy compared to patients who as basic therapy received LAMA/LABA/ICS
