Exploring General Practitioners' Perspectives on Transitioning Patients with Asthma: A Qualitative Interview Study
Background: The transfer from pediatric to adult care during the transition towards adulthood is critical for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with chronic conditions like asthma. Poorly managed transfers of care can impact health outcomes and quality of life. General practitioners (GPs) play a pivotal role in facilitating this transfer. However, little is known about their awareness, challenges faced, and attitudes towards the process. Aims: This study seeks to determine the awareness and experiences among GPs regarding the relevance of the transition process for patients with asthma in the perspective of continuity of care. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Participants were GPs, from diverse healthcare settings in primary care, who treated AYA with a diagnosis of asthma. Interviews were audio-taped, pseudonymized and transcribed verbatim. The interviews were thematically analyzed through NVIVO. Results: A total of 12 GPs participated in this study. Findings represented a variety of levels of awareness among GPs. Their experiences with AYA in the transition period included difficulties in communication and coordination with specialists, and with patient education. The following themes were identified: improving interprofessional communication, patient-physician relationship, a tailored approach and preparing AYA with asthma for the journey through adolescence. Conclusion: This study explored GPs' perspectives on the transfer and transition of AYAs with asthma. Understanding GP experiences helps healthcare systems better support practitioners in navigating patient transitions, ensuring continuity of care for AYA with asthma.
