The top 5 research priorities in asthma- parents' perspective
Background: Paediatric asthma needs family-centred management, and shared decision-making is paramount to delivering holistic care. Parents play a vital role in helping children with asthma. They help deliver person-centred care, and hence their opinion about treatment needs to be explored. Methods: A questionnaire was designed for the parents to identify the top five research areas in children with asthma. This was designed through informal interviews with patient families at the end of each clinic visit. The top ten questions were then selected to be part of this survey. The paper questionnaire was distributed to the families of children with asthma for three months from October to December. We included those children aged 5-16 years who had a formal diagnosis of asthma in line with the ERS 2021 guidelines Results: A total of 65 forms were completed and collected. The children were from diverse backgrounds but the majority(53) of the surveys were from families of Middle Eastern descent. The top 5 priority areas in the descending order were, <list><list-item> Is budesonide nebuliser intermittently better than long-term inhaled corticosteroids? (83%) </list-item><list-item> Can I give an inhaler once a day rather than twice daily? (74%) </list-item><list-item> Can I give inhaled corticosteroids intermittently rather than continuously? (71%) </list-item><list-item> Can I sensitise my child to different aeroallergens to prevent asthma? (59%) </list-item><list-item> Can I give nonsteroidal treatments due to concern about steroids’ side effects? (54%) </list-item></list> Conclusions: This is the first step towards developing management strategies which are family-friendly and that might increase treatment adherence. Future clinical and market research must focus on these areas to improve the quality of care.
