Dx3D: A digital medical education campaign for increasing awareness of the signs of PH & CTEPH on CTPA amongst UK physicians
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare and progressive disease that is often missed due to its vague presentation and symptoms. CT scanning is an important investigation in the patient diagnostic journey, however many physicians are unaware of the associated radiological signs. A digital medical education campaign was launched in early 2023 in the UK, utilising an innovative mobile application called Dx3D, developed by MSD UK. The app provides a guided learning programme around several annotated healthy and pathological CT scans along with a built-in assessment module. The aim was to educate junior doctors, including radiologists and referring physicians, on the identification of signs of PH & CTEPH using CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) scans. The app was disseminated through dedicated lectures across 15 UK hospitals, radiology society conference stand sponsorship and poster displays at Radiology Academies. Feedback was collated throughout the campaign using anonymous surveys. Over the course of the campaign the app was downloaded 409 times, with 184 individualised feedback responses received. Almost all users (99.5%) stated they would recommend this learning resource. The proportion of users who reported a “good” or “very good” understanding of CTPA scan interpretation and PH/ CTEPH increased from 21% to 91%, and 15% to 77% respectively following the campaign. Free text response feedback demonstrated than over 20% of users wanted to see more cases incorporated to expand learning.
