Healthy Lungs for Life for Schools (hlfl4s)–expanding in Italy the pilot of an early life intervention to prevent lung disease in adulthood (a CADSET pilot project)

Background: Healthy Lungs for Life for school(HLFL4S)was formed by the European Lung Foundation and ERS-CRC-CADSET to focus on education about risk factors for respiratory conditions and to encourage early healthy life choices in childhood. Aim: To develop an early year’s intervention teaching children the importance of lung health thus preventing development of respiratory disease. After the first pilot project in Barcelona, Spain in 2023, a second was planned in Italy with new delivery options and materials. Methods: The sessions took place in Bari and Milan. Schools could deliver workshops themselves or invite healthcare professionals to deliver the session. The topic was air pollution. Feedback was gathered from before and after lesson surveys for children and teachers on materials, delivery and to assess learning outcomes. Results: All resources in English/Italian used messaging on prevention linked to the HLFL4S campaign. Three1-hour sessions took place with healthcare professionals for children aged 8-11yo;400 children involved. Children rated the experience 9.1/10 and rated the question “Do you know how to look after your lungs?” 6.6/10 pre vs 8.5/10 post session. Teachers rated the topic 10/10 and will continue working on it;end-year products will be displayed at the ELF-stand at ERS2024 conference. Conclusion: The intervention is adaptable in different country settings. It is well received by children and teachers. Long term follow-up with kids will be needed to prove effectiveness. Next steps are to propose these interventions to the national education-systems among all European countries and to include spirometry-testing.
