Late Breaking Abstract - Changes in spirometry interpretative strategies. Knowledge and perception in health care workers of LATAM

Introduction: In 2021, ATS/ERS updated interpretative strategies for PFT, introducing notable changes in previous algorithms. Aim: Determine the knowledge and perceptions of 2005 and 2021 spirometry standards among Latin American healthcare workers and the risk of non-pulmonologists not recognizing the changes. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a survey among Latin-American healthcare workers who attended spirometry certifications in 2023-2024. We included questions on spirometry expertise, ATS/ERS standards knowledge, and personal opinions on the changes. We used logistic regression for analysis. Results: Among 405 respondents, 56.3% were female, and 50.9% were 26-35 years (Table 1). 14.3% and 32.1% of those performing more than 25 spirometries per month were unaware of the 2005 and 2022 standards, respectively. 66.2% use the LLN of the FEV1/FVC ratio for diagnosis. However, only 59.3% identified the disadvantages of a fixed cutoff point, and non-pulmonologists had a higher risk of not identifying it (OR 3.04) and not understanding z-scores (OR 5.01). 50.62% had a favorable opinion of the changes. Conclusion: More knowledge and understanding of updated spirometry standards are needed, especially among non-pulmonologists.
