Significant Different Levels of CO2, NO2, CO, C6H6, and C3H8 and Serum Leukotriene B4 Between COPD versus COPD with Lung Cancer Patients

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer comprise the leading causes of mortality worldwide. COPD is an independent risk factor for lung carcinoma and COPD not only can affect the lung, but also cause chronic systemic inflammation. Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) is involved in both diseases pathogenesis. There has been development of non invasive method for detecting lung disease in the last few decades, such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) examination. This study aims to analyze the serum Leukotriene B4 and differences of VOCs in exhaled breath of stable COPD and COPD with lung cancer patients. Material & Method: A case-control study was conducted recruiting 20 stable COPD patients and 20 COPD with lung cancer patients. Exhaled breath sample was collected by UB Breath device to check the concentration of VOCs. LTB4 was taken from venous blood and measured using Elisa kit. The data analysis with SPSS version 26. Result: Three VOCs detected higher in COPD with lung cancer group were CO2 (3346.1 vs 2353.05), CO (0.05085 vs 0.00015), and C3H8 (2.8046 vs 1.7161). Lower concentration of NO2 was found in COPD + lung cancer group. Both groups had relative same level of C6H6. The average level of LTB4 serum was found a bit higher in COPD with lung cancer group but not significant. There was significant correlation between C6H6 and LTB4 (p<0.05) only in COPD patients. Conclusion: The levels of CO2, NO2, CO, C6H6, C3H8 are significant different (p<0.05) in COPD with lung cancer group compared to COPD only, also serum Leukotriene B4 increase in both groups. Keywords: VOC, LTB4, COPD, lung cancer
