The use of low dose CT in lung cancer screening: The preliminary result of the national lung cancer screening program

Introduction: Lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer death worldwide for many years. The screening of lung cancer in high-risk population has become gradually important in the early diagnosis of lung cancer and leads to the better treatment outcomes. The Health Promotion Administration in Taiwan has started the national lung cancer screening program since July 1, 2022. Our study tried to explore the preliminary result from a tertiary cancer center. Material and Methods: The definition of high-risk people for lung cancer includes 2 populations. The first population is the people age from 50 to 74 with more than 30 pack years smoking exposure. The second population is the man from the age of 50 to 74 and woman from the age of 45 to 74 whose parents or siblings were diagnosed lung cancer. From July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. There were 1117 high risk people enrolled at the Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Cen Cancer Center in Taiwan. All enrolled people received the low dose chest CT as the initial screening test. Results: There were 11 people diagnosed lung cancer after the initial low dose CT screening. The lung cancer detection rate is 0.98% at the high-risk population. 10 patients were stage 1 lung adenocarcinoma but 1 patient was stage 3 adenocarcinoma. 12.4% people were classified as the lung-RADS 3 and 4.9 % people were the lung-RADS 4. All lung-RADS 3 and Lung lung-RADS 4 patients will receive further clinical follow up. Conclusion: The diagnosis of lung cancer from the screening program usually shows early stage disease. The national lung cancer screening program is still ongoing. We will present the updated results in 2024 ERS annual congress.
