Real-world effectiveness of switching to Benralizumab in patients with severe asthma in the Catalan population. Catalan Society of Pulmonology (SOCAP) Registry.

This study assesses the efficacy of benralizumab in patients with severe asthma who switched from other biologic treatments, within a Catalan population. This is a retrospective, multicenter study involving 10 hospitals from the public health network of Catalonia, with pulmonologists who are members of the Catalan Society of Pulmonology (SOCAP). Focused on improving asthma control, reducing exacerbation rates, enhancing and lung function, included severe asthma patients who transitioned to benralizumab due to insufficient control or intolerance to previous biologics. The evaluation, conducted over 12 months post-switch, included changes in asthma control test (ACT) scores, forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), frequency of exacerbations, and oral corticosteroid usage. Among the 58 patients studied, 62% had previously been treated with omalizumab, with the primary reason for switching being therapeutic failure. The switch to benralizumab resulted in significant improvements: ACT scores increased from 12±4 to 19±4 points (p<0.05), FEV1 improved from 65±20% to 74±17% (p<0.05), and exacerbation rates decreased from 2 [0-10] to 0.5 [0-5] (p<0.05). Overall, 76% of patients experienced a good or partial response to the switch to benralizumab according to EXACTO Scale. The findings indicate that for patients with severe asthma not adequately controlled by other biologics, switching to benralizumab significantly enhances asthma control, lung function, and quality of life, positioning benralizumab as a relevant alternative in the management of severe asthma.
