Bacterial lysate (BL) OM-85 reduces number and severity of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in adults with allergic asthma: a RWE retrospective study

Introduction: OM-85 is well charaterized for its antiviral properties, airway epithelial barrier function effects and tolerance induction. Aim: To investigate real-world effectiveness of add-on OM-85, in reducing number and severity of RTIs in patients with allergic asthma. Methods: A retrospective analysis of medical data of 137 adults with moderate severe allergic asthma over a 12-month period. Symptom episodes indicative of RTIs were classified in 6 classes and a mean severity index (mSI) was estimated. Analysis included patients on SoC (GINA step 4) alone (n =67) or SoC+OM-85 (n=70). Propensity score weighting approach was applied to analyze count data (Poisson regression) and continuous data (linear regression). Results: Patients on OM-85 presented statistically significant reduction on: number of episodes (60%) unscheduled visits (72%) OCS (73%) and antibiotic (67%) cycles. The mSI was 1.15 points lower when OM-85 was added to SoC (p<0.001). Conclusion: Add-on OM-85 reduced number and severity of RTIs in patients with allergic asthma
