Initial data analysis of the SHARP CRC patient population reveals a large heterogeneity among European patients with severe asthma

Background-aim: The heterogeneity of patients with severe asthma in Europe necessitates real-world evidence from large cohorts to improve disease understanding and patient care. This study aims to address this gap. Methods: We analyzed 5419 patients from 13 SHARP CRC (Severe Heterogeneous Asthma Research Collaboration, Patient-centered Clinical Research Collaboration) countries (fig.1A). Results: By country, most patients (73-97%) had adult-onset asthma, were female and had disease of varying duration (fig.1B,1C). Current and ex-smokers ranged from 0-7.8% and 11-43%, respectively (fig.1D). A wide range (0-41%) of patients presented severe airway obstruction (FEV1<60%). Asthma control varied, and most patients presented ≥2 exacerbations in the previous year, despite daily oral corticosteroid (OCS) use (fig.1E), with a mean daily dose ranging from to 2-25 mg prednisolone equivalent. The use of biologics also varied widely (fig.1F). Sinonasal disease ranked highest in all countries; obesity, osteoporosis, corticoadrenal insufficiency, type 2 diabetes mellitus and bronchiectasis were also commonly reported. Conclusions: Patients with severe asthma in the SHARP CRC registry showed great heterogeneity. Most patients were female, with a long history of adult-onset asthma, affected lung function and notable differences in smoking history, asthma control, medication use and comorbidities. <fig><object-id>erj;64/suppl_68/PA4008/F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><graphic></graphic></fig>
