Associations between prenatal findings and pre- and postnatal outcomes in Danish children with congenital pulmonary malformation

Congenital pulmonary malformation (CPM) is a group of rare developmental abnormalities in the lungs. The prenatal prognosis is often good. However, in rare cases severe prenatal complications and intrauterine death can occur. Some neonates will have respiratory symptoms at birth and need surgical removal of CPM. However, most neonates are born without symptoms. Surgical removal of CPM is the standard of care for symptomatic cases. However, the management of asymptomatic children remains controversial and no specific national or international guidelines exist. We aim to investigate the incidence of CPM in Denmark and evaluate associations between prenatal findings and pre- and postnatal outcomes. National register-based prospective cohort study including pre- and postnatally diagnosed CPM from 2016-2022. Prenatal data include type, location, morphology, pregnancy complications and outcomes. Postnatal data include radiology, clinical findings, management and treatment. The study is expected to include 170 cases. Within 39 cases, 55% were females. Gestational age at birth 39±2.4 weeks and birth weight 3434±607 grams. 51% of the malformations were right-sided. No signs of prenatal complications were mentioned. At birth most neonates (>70%) were asymptomatic. The final abstract presented at the ERS Congress will include data on all the abovementioned variables. The study will provide the first national data on patients with CPM. In addition, the study can help identify potential prenatal predictors of respiratory impact among newborns with CPM. The results can contribute to the establishment of a national guideline and database for Danish children with CPM.

Abstract

The study will provide the first national data on patients with CPM. In addition, the study can help identify potential prenatal predictors of respiratory impact among newborns with CPM. The results can contribute to the establishment of a national guideline and database for Danish children with CPM.
