Effect of physical activity Coaching on exercise capacity in lung cancer survivors at short and mid-term: Meta-Analysis

Introduction. The cancer treatment lead to a reduction of exercise capacity in lung cancer patients, damaging their quality of life. The Physical Activity Coaching programs have demonstrated to improve the exercise capacity in different cancer entities, for this reason, its effect has been studied in lung cancer patients. Objective. To assess the effect of physical activity coaching programs on exercise capacity in lung cancer survivors. Methods. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and pilot randomized controlled trials was conducted. We performed a literature search using MEDLINE (via Pubmed), Web of Science, Science Direct and Cochrane Library (last search November 2023). The studies were focus on physical activity coaching interventions, lung cancer survivors, and the exercise capacity (6MWD) assessment at short and mid-term. Results. We selected 8 studies, which included 534 patients with lung cancer. The pooled mean difference showed significant overall effect of Physical Activity Coaching compared with control group at short-term (standard mean difference = 47.89, 95% confidence interval = 3.52, 92.27; p=0.03) and mid-term (standard mean difference = 63.73, 95% confidence interval = 54.23, 73.23; p< 0.00001). Conclusion. This meta-analysis suggests a beneficial effect of Physical Activity Coaching interventions for improving exercise capacity in lung cancer patients at short and mid-term.
