Evaluation of the association between nutritional status and socioeconomic factor with lung function in PCD Patients in the UK
Evaluation of the association between nutritional status and socioeconomic factor with lung function in PCD Patients in the UK Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, genetically inherited disorder characterized by impaired ciliary function then impacting the respiratory system (Goutaki et al., 2017). Nowadays, Nutritional status and socioeconomic factors as key determinants of overall health has been relatively underexplored in PCD patients. This cross-sectional study of 190 PCD patients at Royal Brompton Hospital aimed to explore the nutritional status and socio-economic factors of PCD patients and their association with lung function. Data were collected through the Graphnet EPR system, underwent ANOVA and multiple regression analysis models to identify potential associations between nutritional indicators and IMD deciles and lung function. Results suggested 46.9% of PCD patients experience abnormal BMI. All the PCD patients' lung function was considerably lower than the GLI 2012 reference values. A strong association was found between low BMI and decreased lung function in PCD patients, but there was no significant correlation with IMD. Vitamin D data were unavailable for over two-thirds of patients, and the average level of the 48 PCD patients for whom data were available was 58 nmol/L. This study emphasised the significance of nutritional evaluation in PCD patients by association between BMI and FEV1, which offers potential avenues for nutritional interventions in the clinical management of PCD. Future research should prioritize longitudinal analyses, comprehensive vitamin D assessments, and potential therapeutic interventions for PCD patients.
