Vaccination status of the TRITRIAL study population.

RATIONALE: Individuals with COPD should adhere to all recommended vaccinations according to the 2024 GOLD Report, the US CDC, and the ECDC. Primarily suggested are influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal vaccinations. Immunization may reduce exacerbation frequency and disease severity. OBJECTIVE: To assess vaccination status among COPD patients in Italy based on the TRITRIAL population. METHODS: A total of 655 COPD patients (aged ≥ 40 years, with ≥ 1 moderate-severe exacerbation in the previous year and CAT score >10) were analyzed in TRITRIAL, an observational study evaluating health status changes [CAT score] in patients receiving extrafine triple inhaled therapy (BDP/FF/G) for 1 year. RESULTS: The mean age of the TRITRIAL population (n=655) was 71.2 years, with 57.6% (n=377) aged between 65 and 80 years. Only 23 (3.5%) reported receiving a vaccine as previous or concomitant medication, with 72.7% being COVID-19 vaccines. Throughout the study, 116 flu vaccines and 25 pneumococcal vaccines were administered. During the study 19.4% of patients experienced moderate to severe exacerbations. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the constraints of a real-life study, the TRITRIAL study reveals a persistently low vaccination rate among COPD patients in Italy. It cannot be discounted that some exacerbations, albeit reduced by inhalation therapy, could have been further prevented with recommended vaccinations.
