Clinical Significance of 30-Second Sit-to-Stand Test in Patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
Aim: This study aims to determine the predictor role of the 30-Second Sit-to-Stand Test (30-Sec-STS) on clinical parameters in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Method: Twenty-eight patients with IPF (eight women and twenty men, mean age=64.10±7.55) were included in the study. Gender-age-physiology (GAP) index score was calculated (mean score: 2.50±1.26, 22=Stage I, 5=Stage II, 1= Stage III). A spirometer was performed (FVC:77.22±17.91%, DLCO:63.39±13.26%). Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) were assessed. 30-Sec-STS, six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and incremental shuttle walk distance (ISWD) were calculated. Dyspnea severity (mMRC), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and Saint-George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) were questioned. Results: Significant correlations were found between 30Sec-STS and MIP (r=0.482), MEP (r=0.512), 6MWD (r=0.482), ISWD (r=0.578), mMRC (r=-0.601), FSS (r=-0.471), and SGRQ (r=-0.492) (p<0.05 for all). With multiple linear regression analysis, 30Sec-STS was the only independent predictor of mMRC (adjusted R2=0.326, unstandardized ß=-2.32, p=0.041). Conclusion: This study showed that 30Sec-STS is correlated with MIP, MEP, submaximal and maximal exercise capacity, dyspnea severity, fatigue and quality of life. In addition, we showed the predictor role of 30Sec-STS on dyspnea severity (mMRC) which is a common symptom in IPF.
