Evaluation of effectiveness of psychological therapy in improving psychological and clinical parameters in severe asthma with co-morbid psychology.

Introduction: Psychological morbidity is prevalent in severe asthma and impacts clinical outcomes. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of psychological therapy on patient well-being and asthma related outcomes. Method: Severe asthma patients (30, table a) who completed psychological therapy December 2019 to October 2022 were included. Clinical and psychological outcomes pre and post therapy were statistically analysed. Results: All patients had confirmed severe asthma. Brief (1-6) therapy sessions were conducted in 37.6% of cases, and long-term (7-18) sessions were conducted in 63.4%. Mean Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score moved from the moderately severe 16.9±5.8 to the mild 9.4±5.0 depression range after therapy, p<0.0001, whilst the median Generalised Anxiety Disorder-Assessment-7 score moved from moderate 14.5 (12,19) to mild 9 (7.3,11) anxiety range, p= 0.0002. The ACQ-6 improved from baseline post-therapy. Hospital admissions and exacerbations also improved. Conclusion: Psychological therapy can improve psychological and asthma related clinical outcomes in patients with severe asthma. <fig><object-id>erj;64/suppl_68/PA3248/F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><object-id>F1</object-id><graphic></graphic></fig> <fig><object-id>erj;64/suppl_68/PA3248/F2</object-id><object-id>F2</object-id><object-id>F2</object-id><graphic></graphic></fig>
