Exploring Covid-19’s role in postoperative complications incidence following Lung Resection Surgeries for Cancer

Abstract

Introduction: While the COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably posed immense challenges to humanity, its definitive conclusion remains uncertain, and its health implications, including the discovery of medium- and long-term complications, have yet to be fully elucidated. The prevalence of infection with COVID-19 has become a history shared by the majority of individuals, making it important to assess its impact on patients undergoing subsequent surgical procedures. Our study aims to deduce abnormalities and assess the impact of COVID-19 infection on the lungs, particularly in the setting of lung resection, in individuals operated on during the first four years of the pandemic. Materials and methods: Our retrospective study performed in the thoracic and vascular surgery department of our hospital center in which all patients operated on for lung resection surgery were included and all clinical, paraclinical and evolutionary data during hospitalization were collected. Results: With a sex ratio favoring males (1.76), an average age of 62.8 years, and a prevalent smoking history (83.3%), Our study showed the Implication of covid-19 in prolonged air leak in 46% of cases and post-operative anemia in 40% of cases. Conclusion: The relevance of studying the consequences of COVID-19 infection in people undergoing pulmonary resection is all the greater given that this is an antecedent common to a majority of the population. Understanding the implications of this viral infection on lung health and lung resection outcomes is essential to making informed decisions and optimizing the care of people who have undergone surgery in the relatively early post-pandemic period.
