Examination of the Psychometric Properties of the De-Morton Mobility Index in Patients Discharged from Intensive Care Unit

Introduction: De-Morton Mobility Index(DEMMI) is a scale recommended for mobility evaluation in the reports of specialists working in the field of intensive care(IC), but the psychometric properties of its Turkish adaptation in these patients are unknown. Aim: To examine the psychometric properties of DEMMI in patients discharged from IC. Methods: Our study included 102 patients(82 males, median age; 63 years). For structural validity, correlation coefficients between DEMMI and the Barthel Index(BI), Katz Activities of Daily Living Scale, Medical Research Council(MRC) Muscle Strength Assessment, total mechanical ventilation time, IC stay, age, and APACHE-II score were calculated. MRC muscle strength value score was used for known group validity. Cronbach's α coefficient was measured for internal consistency. For test-retest reliability, the scale was reapplied to the patients 24 hours later and the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) and minimal detectable change value were calculated. Results: DEMMI total score, BI and Katz scores were at a high level(r=0.791, r=0.722, p<0.001, respectively), while MRC muscle strength value, IC stay and total mechanical ventilation time were at a moderate level(r=0.614, p<0.001 respectively) showed a correlation. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be excellent(Cronbach's α = 0.991). The ICC value calculated for inter-measurement reliability was 0.972, and the minimal detectable change value was 6.82. Conclusion: DEMMI was found to be a valid and reliable scale in patients discharged from IC. Clinicians can safely apply this scale to their patients for functionality assessments of patients discharged from the IC.
