Investigation of methods to identify the etiology of infection rapidly and accurately by using the Biofire® Film Array® Pneumonia Panel (PN panel) in admitting pneumonia.

Background: Accurate identification of pathogens in pneumonia treatment leads to appropriate antimicrobial therapy and prevents unnecessary antimicrobial prescriptions and the development of drug resistance. However, standard methods take a long time to report results. Therefore, antimicrobial selection had to be based on clinical presentation, other risk factors, and experience. Material and methods: We collected sputum or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from patients admitted with pneumonia who suffering from respiratory disease. We used the Biofire® Film Array® Pneumonia Panel panel (PN panel) and routine bacterial culture for identification organisms caused pneumonia. Results: Of 67 patients were enrolled. A total of 67 specimens was included in our study. The PN panel detected 13 bacteria and 2 antimicrobial resistance markers. The PN panel detected Staphylococcus aureus and detected mec A/C and MREJ genes most frequently. In virus, the PN panel detected Human Rhino/ Enterovirus most frequently. Meanwhile, routine bacterial culture detected Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) most frequently. The perfectly concordance between the PN panel and routine bacterial culture was 46.3% The overall positive percent between the PN panel and routine culture for MRSA detection were 100.0% Conversely, the PN panel was negative and routine culture was positive organisms contained mycobacterium.spp and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Conclusion: The PN Panel had the potential to be a rapid and accurate method for identify the infectious etiology.

Abstract

Background: Accurate identification of pathogens in pneumonia treatment leads to appropriate antimicrobial therapy and prevents unnecessary antimicrobial prescriptions and the development of drug resistance. However, standard methods take a long time to report results. Therefore, antimicrobial selection had to be based on clinical presentation, other risk factors, and experience.
