Leveraging Fiber Optic Technology For Enhanced Well Integrity Monitoring In Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)

Abstract Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has been at the forefront of deploying fiber optic technology as a surveillance tool in multiple Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques across the Sultanate of Oman. This initiative aims to accelerate and enhance recovery from mature fields while ensuring the highest levels of well integrity. However, the increase in production activities has coincided with heightened concerns over well integrity, particularly relating to operational challenges and the cost-effectiveness of maintaining optimal uptime. Additional concerns include Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) risks that cannot be overlooked, especially in high-risk environments characterized by H2S, HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) settings, and remote locations. Moreover, significant production deferments resulting from integrity issues can severely impact high-producing wells. This paper explores the application of fiber optic technology within PDO's operations and examines its far-reaching implications for monitoring well integrity, boosting operational efficiency, and enhancing safety management procedures. The findings highlight the transformative potential of fiber optics in revolutionizing how oil and gas operations manage well integrity issues, ultimately contributing to more sustainable production practices.
