ON IONIZATION LOSS DISTRIBUTION OF RELATIVISTIC PARTICLES IN THIN DETECTORS

Ionization energy loss distribution of high-energy charged particles in thin detectors is considered. Its modification due to the fact that a part of δ-electrons, kicked out from the atoms by the incident particles, escape from the detector and do not dispose of all their kinetic energy inside it, is estimated and shown to be negligibly small. The physical reasons for this are discussed. The parameters responsible for the magnitude of this modification are obtained.

Abstract

Ionization energy loss distribution of high-energy charged particles in thin detectors is considered. Its modification due to the fact that a part of δ-electrons, kicked out from the atoms by the incident particles, escape from the detector and do not dispose of all their kinetic energy inside it, is estimated and shown to be negligibly small. The physical reasons for this are discussed. The parameters responsible for the magnitude of this modification are obtained.
