Women in Science: Representation in Scientific Publication in Eastern Europe

This study examines the representation of women in scientific publications in Eastern Europe by analyzing data from the SCImago Journal & Country Rank for 14 countries. The research explores the gender gap in research productivity and sheds light on the challenges faced by female researchers in the region. By focusing on the top 500 scientific publications, the study identifies factors influencing female authorship representation, such as subject categories, journal rankings, and country effects. Results indicate that journals with female representation primarily come from the social sciences fields, while the physical sciences are underrepresented. Additionally, journal prestige ranking and female authorship are negatively correlated. The findings highlight the underrepresentation of women in research output and emphasize the importance of promoting gender equality in STEM fields and higher education. This research contributes to the existing literature by addressing a research gap in women's scientific output in Eastern Europe.
