Superiority of Monopolar Pulse: Time-Domain Antennas Excitation in UWB Communication Systems
Since there is no DC component, bipolar pulses are usually considered to be more suitable for the excitation of time-domain antenna (TDA). Aimed at generating higher radiation field under a brief system architecture, this letter proposes that the monopolar pulse (MP) is more suitable than the bipolar pulse (BP) for the excitation of TDAs in ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems. To get deep insights of this viewpoint, we theoretically derive the numerical relationship between BP and MP with same energy and analyze the radiation field amplitude of common TDAs under BP and MP excitation. The conclusion can simplify UWB communication systems, resulting in a better tradeoff between complexity/cost and radiation field amplitude. Furthermore, the MP excitation increases the low-frequency component of radiation pulses, which then increases the penetration and reduces the channel attenuation during transmission.
