Incidence of proximal tibial coronal deformity in valgus knees – A multicentric analysis of 250 total knee arthroplasty patients from South India
Proximal tibial coronal deformity (PTCD) can develop in valgus knees affected by arthritis, potentially causing misalignment of components in Total Knee Replacement (TKR). The study examined the occurrence of proximal tibial deformity in valgus knees and its relationship with the severity of the valgus deformity. 189 patients (250 knees) diagnosed with Osteoarthritis with valgus knee deformity were included in the study. Full-length weight-bearing alignment radiographs were processed. Proximal tibial deformity was assessed in full-length weight-bearing X-ray films and bowing exceeding 3° was deemed significant. Tibia was bowed in 119 knees, accounting for 47. 6% of cases. The severity of valgus deformity showed a significant positive correlation with tibia valga (p < 0. 001). Proximal tibial coronal deformity is a prevalent occurrence in valgus knees. PTCD has a robust positive correlation with the severity of valgus deformity. Long leg films offer a valuable insight into the true extent of deformity and are an indispensable tool when preparing for a Total Knee Replacement in valgus knees.
