Plastic Optical Fiber Dimension Measurement Based on Canny Edge Detection and Hough Line Detection

This paper presents an innovative plastic optical fiber diameter measurement algorithm based on Canny edge detection and Hough line detection. Initially, the camera and measurement system are calibrated, and their performance is evaluated using calibration blocks to analyze the system's accuracy. Subsequently, industrial cameras equipped with telecentric lenses capture images of plastic optical fibers, which undergo preprocessing. The algorithm employs convex hull calculations and distance transformation methods to determine the coordinates of the pixel representing the center of the fiber's largest inscribed circle. Finally, the Canny edge detection and Hough line detection algorithms precisely locate the contours of the plastic optical fibers, and, in conjunction with the calculated center coordinates of the largest inscribed circle, determine the fiber's internal diameter. The accuracy and stability of the proposed algorithm are validated through experimental verification.
