Coupler Design for THz-Driven Acceleration Applications

The design and analysis of a linearly tapered coupler for use in a THz-driven acceleration system is presented. A laser-generated THz pulse in the form of two Gaussian spots is captured and converted into the accelerating mode of a rectangular dielectric-lined waveguide. Simulations show that up to 65% of the excited power can be coupled into the required accelerating mode of a dielectric-lined metal waveguide. Some alignment tolerance tests have been performed.

Abstract

The design and analysis of a linearly tapered coupler for use in a THz-driven acceleration system is presented. A laser-generated THz pulse in the form of two Gaussian spots is captured and converted into the accelerating mode of a rectangular dielectric-lined waveguide. Simulations show that up to 65% of the excited power can be coupled into the required accelerating mode of a dielectric-lined metal waveguide. Some alignment tolerance tests have been performed.
