High-speed Underwater Acoustic Communication System based on OAM-OFDM Index Modulation

Acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave has orthogonality between different modes, which can be utilized as a new multiplexing dimension to increase channel capacity of underwater acoustic communication systems. Combining OAM with other multiplexing techniques in different dimensions can further improve the data rate. In this paper, we propose a system integrating the acoustic OAM modes, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and index modulation (IM) to achieve high-speed underwater acoustic communication. The OAM-OFDM-IM communication system is established and its performance is simulated. The analysis of technical indicators verifies that the system's data transmission rate is significantly improved and its bit error rate performance enhances at high signal-to-noise ratio.
