Power Quality Improvement Using Three Phase Three Wire Shunt Active Power Filter
The use of harmonic polluting loads is increasing and is creating power quality issues in the grid. The presence of harmonic pollution causes communication line interference, equipment damage, and losses in power production. Thus, increased harmonics problems necessitate focus while there are numerous tools available for reducing the impact of harmonics. In this paper a three-wire, three-phase, shunt active power filter that operates using unit template control algorithm is proposed to mitigate the harmonic distortion in the in the grid. The suggested shunt active power filter control algorithm easily maintains a self-supporting DC bus. The PWM switching signals are generated by the Current Controller. The passive power filter is also implemented for comparison purpose. The MATLAB/Simulink environment is used to implement the control strategy. The simulation results show that the shunt active power filter significantly reduces harmonics as compared to a passive power filter.
