Electrooculogram as a Communication Alternative for People with Different Abilities

This paper addresses the critical issue of communication impairment in individuals with severe motor disabilities, exacerbated by conditions like Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Effective communication is essential for social integration and personal development, yet many affected individuals lack access to suitable assistive devices. This research focuses on the design and implementation of a medical device utilizing Electrooculography (EOG) to enable communication through eye movements. The proposed system consists of signal acquisition via analog circuitry, data interpretation interfaced with an Arduino board, and a user-friendly graphical interface developed in Python. Key findings demonstrate the feasibility of using EOG for controlling communication interfaces, facilitating interaction and autonomy for users. Future directions include mobile application integration for caregiver alerts and further clinical applications of EOG in neurological diagnostics. This project represents a significant advancement in assistive technology, aiming to enhance the quality of life and social participation of individuals with severe motor disabilities globally.
