Design, Modelling, and Performance Comparison of Five-Phase PMSM Drive
In today’s electrical industry, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are replacing Induction Motors due to their numerous advantages such as high-power density, high efficiency, and reduced torque ripple. Reliability is crucial in high-power applications like aerospace, electric ships, machine tools, wind power generation, and electric vehicles. Multi-phase machines, especially multi-phase PMSMs, are well-suited for these applications due to their high fault tolerance capability and reliability. However, the commercial production of multi-phase machines is not yet widespread due to their high manufacturing cost. To address this, it is necessary to develop a model and perform its analysis using finite element analysis to reduce manufacturing costs, material wastage, and expert’s time. This approach helps to create better products and reduce total production costs. This paper discusses the design, mathematical modelling, development, and performance of a five-phase PMSM. The development process uses finite element analysis-based ANSYS MAXWELL software, while mathematical verification is done using MATLAB Simulink. The performance characteristics obtained from MAXWELL and MATLAB models are compared and verified.
