DDoS Landscape: Insight into Attacks and Tools

Cyberattacks have become a common occurrence in every corner of society where the Internet has spread. With almost all of the businesses online, nefarious people are finding it more incentivized to carry out attacks against these online entities. DDoS attacks have emerged as one of the most powerful and popular cyberattacks in the recent past. Continually evolving defense tactics have resulted from their extreme devastation combined with their ease of execution. In this paper, we provide a basic architecture of DDoS attacks and discuss a few popular DDoS tools available online. We carry out a case study in which we investigate the characteristics of malicious packets generated by different tools as a reference for DDoS detection systems.
