Speed Control of an In-wheel brushless DCmotor using PID controller for EV’s
In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation option. A key factor in the performance and efficiency of EVs is the precise control of the electric motor driving the vehicle. This study introduces a robust speed control methodology for in-wheel brushless DC (BLDC) motors in EVs using a proportional integral-derivative (PID) controller. In-wheel motors offer numerous advantages such as improved vehicle dynamics, increased energy efficiency, and simplified drivetrain architecture. However, precise speed regulation is essential to optimize performance and ensure vehicle stability, particularly in varying operating conditions. The proposed PID controller is designed to address the inherent challenges of in-wheel BLDC motor control, including nonlinearities, disturbances, and dynamic load variations. Through systematic tuning and optimization, the PID controller ensures accurate speed tracking with minimal overshoot and settling time. Simulation studies are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the control strategy across a range of operating conditions, including acceleration, deceleration, and steady-state cruising. The experimental results confirm the ability of the PID controller to maintain precise speed control under different driving scenarios, highlighting its potential for enhancing the performance and efficiency of electric propulsion systems in next-generation electric vehicles and the prototype will be implemented
